Batanes - What to See

What to See

Some people have described Batanes tourist spots as breath-taking and they would be right. Batanes pictures on the Internet don’t even come close to giving justice to the beauty of this island. One of the most popular sites in Batanes is Mt. Iraya. There are, however, more places to visit. Here are a few examples:

Mt. Iraya

A 1008-meter dormant volcano that last erupted some 400 years ago, Mt. Iraya is an important landmark that is stepped in legend. Adventurous types will enjoy the heavily forested and steep trail leading towards Mt. Iraya. The forest is filled with plants and wildlife, giving everyone opportunities to take a lot of Batanes pictures for their photo albums back home.

Basco Cathedral

The Church of Sto. Domingo de Basco is one of the oldest churches in Batanes. Established in 1783, the Basco Cathedral can be found right at the town’s capitol. If architecture is your thing, be sure to check out the walls of this church. The Basco Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Concepcion who happens to be the patroness of Batanes.

Mahatao View Deck

Looking for the perfect site to take those Batanes pictures? Next to Mt. Iraya, Mahatao View Deck is the ideal place for those photo ops. Tourists can enjoy an enthralling view of the sea while sitting down on stone benches.

Burial Caves

Be sure to check out the pre-historic burial caves in Batanes. They are located in the town of Itbayat. During the old days, human remains were placed in clay jars and left inside the caves. Definitely a good addition to your itinerary.

Rolling Hills

Another perfect addition to your album of Batanes pictures! Visit the Rolling Hills and take a picture of the sunset. You can also breathe in the fantastic scenery which includes hills that are lush with greenery. Adventurous? Hire a motorcycle and go for a drive in the hills!

Nakabuang Beach and Arch

Ask a tour guide about having lunch at the Nakabuang arch. Trust me, it will be worth it. Not only will you be able to see the arch—a rock sculptured by nature—you can also swim in the clear waters and lounge in the white sands of Nakabuang beach.

Rakuh-A-Payaman

Also called “Marlboro Country”, the Payaman is a pasture that over-looks farm fields and the Pacific Ocean. One can see both the Mahatao Lighthouse and Mt. Iraya from the Payaman—both fantastic additions to an already scenic view.

Cuyab Bird Watching

Batanes is the perfect place for bird watching. Tourists can watch migratory birds from China that flock the islands in search of a warmer climate every October. These colorful creatures are a welcome addition to an island already teeming with wildlife.

Di-atay Beach

Located along the national highway between Mahatao and Ivana, Di-atay Beach is a cove with colorful rocks. A white sand beach, Di-atay is perfect for picnic. Very scenic, visitors can witness large waves crashing against rocks. Waves can sometimes reach thirty feet. Di-atay Beach is less than 10 kilometers from Basco
